million
Accomplishments: Reputation: Improved ranking from 41 to top 25 among nationally
ranked liberal arts colleges, including 14th most selective ranking in 2000 with
32% admit rate. Financial: Quintupled endowment ($30 million to $170 million); raised
return on investment to top quartile of academic institutions. Completed $138 million
campaign, including endowments for 26 new chairs and directorships. Completed $60
million in new buildings and renovations. Planning: Designed and implemented five-year
strategic plans currently used by Harvard Institute of Educational Management as
successful case study. Curriculum: Reduced faculty teaching load while introducing
comprehensive curricular reform including four interdisciplinary centers and multiple
international programs. Community: Strengthened relationship between College and
City of New London, led community development effort, and helped create new learning
opportunities for students and faculty in the City.

Revitalized defunct non-profit development organization, planning and implementing
economic development and social justice for 25,000-person city and 250,000-person
county.
Accomplishments:
1 Recruited citizens to reestablish community-based development
authority, and secured funding to hire professional staff of nine.
2 Attracted over
$300 million in new private investment in City, including global research headquarters
of Pfizer, Inc.
3 Acquired surplus U.S. Navy base from Department of Defense; created
and achieved permitting for a 50-acre Municipal Development Plan authorizing transformation
of the area with citizen support.
4 Managed $75 million in city and state-funded
projects including creation of a $17 million downtown waterfront park and the upgrading
of the state commercial pier in New London.
5 Delivered a downtown plan by EDAW
and Beyer, Blinder, Belle to renovate downtown New London.
6 Completed the development
agreement with Corcoran Jennison and the State of Connecticut to proceed with plans
for a four star hotel and conference center, a marina, riverwalk, waterfront, housing
and a bio-science and office complex.
